Question 1

How does zero-knowledge encryption work?

Accepted Answer

Your data is encrypted on your device before it ever leaves. We never have access to your master password or your vault contents. Even if our servers were compromised, your data remains secure.

Question 2

Can you see my passwords?

Accepted Answer

No. FoxVault uses zero-knowledge encryption — your data is encrypted with keys derived from your master password before it reaches our servers. We cannot decrypt, read, or access your vault contents under any circumstances.

Question 3

How is FoxVault different from Bitwarden or 1Password?

Accepted Answer

FoxVault encrypts every item with its own unique key (per-item key isolation), isolates all key material inside a Web Worker (immune to XSS), and supports sensitivity tiers that require a separate PIN or hardware key for critical items. Most competitors use a single key for the entire vault. Read our security whitepaper for a full comparison.

Question 4

What happens if FoxVault gets hacked?

Accepted Answer

Attackers would only get encrypted blobs. Without your master password and secret key, the data is unreadable. Per-item encryption means even cracking one key doesn’t expose other items.

Question 5

What security audits have you completed?

Accepted Answer

We are currently preparing for our first independent security audit. Our full encryption protocol is documented in our security whitepaper so it can be reviewed by anyone.

Question 6

What is the FoxVault encryption protocol?

Accepted Answer

FoxVault v1 introduces three novel hardening layers: Trapdoor-Delay AEAD for non-parallelizable brute-force protection, Memory-Hard Entanglement that makes your vault size a security parameter, and Distributed Key Verification that requires decrypting every item to verify a password guess. Combined, these make each guess cost 101 seconds of sequential computation.

Question 7

How does the secret key work?

Accepted Answer

An optional 256-bit key stored on your device, combined with your password via HKDF. Even if someone knows your password, they can't decrypt without the secret key. You can transfer it to new devices via QR code, file upload, or recovery phrase.

Question 8

What happens if I lose my secret key?

Accepted Answer

Use your 12-word recovery phrase to restore access. The recovery phrase independently encrypts your vault keys and can bypass both the password and secret key.

Question 9

Can I use FoxVault offline?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Your vault is stored locally on your device and works without an internet connection. Install FoxVault as a PWA for the best offline experience. Changes sync automatically when you reconnect.

Question 10

Can I import from another password manager?

Accepted Answer

Yes. FoxVault supports import from Bitwarden, 1Password, LastPass, Proton Pass, Chrome, Firefox, and more. Most imports take under 30 seconds.

Question 11

Can I export my data?

Accepted Answer

Anytime. You can export your full vault in CSV, JSON, or encrypted formats. Your data is yours — we never lock you in.

Question 12

Do you have a mobile app?

Accepted Answer

FoxVault works as a progressive web app (PWA) on any device including mobile. A native mobile app is coming soon.

Question 13

Can I share passwords with my family?

Accepted Answer

Shared vaults are available on team plans with role-based access control. All sharing is end-to-end encrypted.

Question 14

What platforms does FoxVault support?

Accepted Answer

FoxVault runs in any modern browser as a web app and can be installed as a PWA on desktop and mobile. Native Android app is available, with iOS coming soon.

Question 15

Does FoxVault have a browser extension?

Accepted Answer

Yes. The FoxVault browser extension supports Chrome with autofill, auto-save, password generation, and TOTP support. All encryption happens in the background service worker.

Question 16

Can I share passwords with my team?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Each vault has its own encryption key, so sharing a vault shares only that vault's data. Team members each derive their own keys independently.

Question 17

Does FoxVault support 2FA codes?

Accepted Answer

Yes. FoxVault has a built-in TOTP authenticator. Your 2FA secrets are encrypted with per-item keys and can auto-fill after login.

Question 18

Is FoxVault really free for personal use?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Individual accounts get full access to core features including unlimited passwords, AES-256 encryption, offline access, and cross-device sync — all completely free. No credit card required.

Question 19

What happens if I forget my master password?

Accepted Answer

During setup, FoxVault generates a 12-word recovery phrase. This phrase can restore access to your vault if you forget your master password. Without it, recovery is not possible — that’s the tradeoff of true zero-knowledge encryption.

Question 20

What happens if FoxVault shuts down?

Accepted Answer

Your vault is stored locally on your device and can be exported at any time. Even if our servers went offline permanently, your local data remains accessible and exportable.

Question 21

Is FoxVault open source?

Accepted Answer

Our encryption protocol is fully documented in our public security whitepaper. We are evaluating open-sourcing the client in the future.

Question 22

Do you offer a free trial for paid plans?

Accepted Answer

The personal plan is free forever with no limits. Team plans include a trial period so you can evaluate shared vault features before committing.
