How does zero-knowledge encryption work?

Can you see my passwords?

No. FoxVault uses zero-knowledge encryption — your data is encrypted with keys derived from your master password before it reaches our servers. We cannot decrypt, read, or access your vault contents under any circumstances.

How is FoxVault different from Bitwarden or 1Password?

FoxVault encrypts every item with its own unique key (per-item key isolation), isolates all key material inside a Web Worker (immune to XSS), and supports sensitivity tiers that require a separate PIN or hardware key for critical items. What happens if FoxVault gets hacked?

Attackers would only get encrypted blobs. Without your master password and secret key, the data is unreadable. Per-item encryption means even cracking one key doesn’t expose other items.

What is the FoxVault encryption protocol?

FoxVault v1 introduces three novel hardening layers: Trapdoor-Delay AEAD for non-parallelizable brute-force protection, Memory-Hard Entanglement that makes your vault size a security parameter, and Distributed Key Verification that requires decrypting every item to verify a password guess. Combined, these make each guess cost 101 seconds of sequential computation.

How does the secret key work?

An optional 256-bit key stored on your device, combined with your password via HKDF. Even if someone knows your password, they can't decrypt without the secret key. You can transfer it to new devices via QR code, file upload, or recovery phrase.

What happens if I lose my secret key?

Use your 12-word recovery phrase to restore access. The recovery phrase independently encrypts your vault keys and can bypass both the password and secret key.

Yes. Each vault has its own encryption key, so sharing a vault shares only that vault's data. Team members each derive their own keys independently.

During setup, FoxVault generates a 12-word recovery phrase. This phrase can restore access to your vault if you forget your master password. Without it, recovery is not possible — that’s the tradeoff of true zero-knowledge encryption.
